The GTBANK food and drink event 2019 started on the 28th of April 2019. This event showcased a lot of vendors who specialised in food, grills, drinks and farm produce.
asides the normal buying, selling and networking which came with such events, GTBANK also had masterclasses delivered by renowned international and local chefs. The best part is that both entrance to the event and masterclasses were FREE
Yours truly took advantage of the opportunity to attend and learn more interesting tricks about food , flavours and food styling.
Grab your reading lens as I take you through the biggest food and drink event in Africa which happened in Lagos Nigeria.
The first masterclass I attended was by Philip Howard titled ” Building and Maintaining a World Class Restaurant.
Philip Howard who is also known as the “Chef’s Chef” is one of Britain’s ‘s most celebrated culinary experts and has a reputation for delivering culinary pleasure through harmony of flavours rather than technical wizardry or innovation.
Phil’s life as a chef started at Roux Restaurants in 1988, and two years after, he opened his first restaurant, The Square, earning critical acclaim and two Michelin stars , which he held for 17 years. Phil later took a pause from work in the kitchen, following the sale of The Square, He made a return in 2016 after opening his restaurant, Elystan Street, in London.
Since its opening, Elystan Street has received several awards including a Michelin Star in its first year. In 2017, Phil opened UNION, a small and characterful restaurant in Montalbert, France. This seasonal restaurant is fast establishing itself as the go to restaurant for the finest food in the area. Phil is also a partner of 6 other restaurants across Europe.
It was fun to watch Phil talk about the role salt, sugar and pepper play in bringing out food flavours, the sweet-sour experience and the best times to add these 3 ingredients to get the best flavour from beef and I forgot to mention that Phil tripped and almost fell on stage in Lagos 😳 common guys! it wasn’t that bad 🙂
I made videos to keep you abreast of the all the juicy moments in Phil’s masterclass 😀
